Men’s Lacrosse vs. No. 16 RPI

This past Wednesday, the Men’s Lacrosse team versed no. 16 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Dutchmen won in a fourth stanza surge.

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers were off to a quick start as they scored the first two goals of the game in the first four minutes into play.

The Dutchmen were slow to respond to the two unanswered goals, but Kerry Lyne ’20 scored the first goal for Union with an assist from Brian Davis ’21.

Keaton McCann ’21 tied the game 40 seconds after Lyne’s goal.

Halfway through the first stanza, the Dutchmen took the lead as Aidan Flood ’21 made it a 3-2 game. In the last 57 seconds of play the Engineers re-tied the game going into the second stanza.

Both team battled it out in the second and third stanzas to claim the lead. Flood scored 40 seconds into play in the second stanza giving the Dutchmen the lead.

This did not last long as the Engineers scored soon after once again re-tying the game. Hayden Frey ’21, Eric Zimm ’20, Kieran McGovern ’21 and Quinn Helmig ’21 each scored a piece in the second stanza, ending at the half with a score of 8-7, with the Dutchmen leading.

Josh Willis ’20, and Lyne both scored in the third stanza, while Davis had back-to-back goals. The third stanza ended with a tie of 12-12.

The Dutchmen dominated the remaining 15 minutes of play as they had a string of five unanswered goal to secure the win.

Frey, Jimmy Connelly ’20, McCann, Lyne all scored with Frey scoring twice.

Highlights of this game include the Dutchmen winning 25 of 33 faceoffs. Alex Newhouse ’19 won 16 out of the 17 in the first half and Patrick Regan ’20 was successful 10 out of 14 attempts.

Jack Santilli ’19 had 11 saves in the second half and the Dutchmen put 20 shots on goal to RPI’s 10 in the last 30 minutes.

With this victory and the 8-5 victory against Vassar, the Dutchmen have a 12-1 record and are 7-0 in the Liberty League and move up to number 12 in the national rankings.

They also receive a bid into the upcoming Liberty League Tournament.

The men return to action on April 24 as they take on nationally ranked number one RIT on Frank Bailey Field as they finish their regular season.
