For most at Union College, the name “Jermaine” rings a bell of familiarity. Jermaine Goodwin, a Union Dining employee, is what Gen Zs often refer to as a “campus celebrity.” The term is used to describe a student, staff member, or local figure who is recognised by various people within a college campus, even if they aren’t personally known.
Popular amongst students for his empathetic nature and outgoing personality, Jermaine is a beloved individual across Union’s student body, and a name that almost everyone instantly recognises.
Besides his job at Union dining, Jermaine has had a long history of DJing in and around Schenectady under the name “DJ ScabZ”. He started DJing in high school, back in 1997. He has had a profound love for the art ever since, continuing it alongside his career at Union. His favorite thing about DJing is having the pleasure and opportunity to make people dance and have a good time.
“I love music. Music is my life,” shared Goodwin when asked about DJing.
On the weekend of April 11, 2026, Jermaine made his DJ debut on Union’s campus by performing live at a fraternity (frat) in its off-campus residence. His performance pulled a huge crowd of students, even those who don’t normally attend “frat parties”, who came out in support of one of their favorite Union employees.
“Jermaine is a great DJ who really knows how to mix songs to get the crowd hyped. It’s a shame it wasn’t longer since it was the best party since fall term,” shared Rory Marquis ’28.
While it was only his first performance at a frat house, Jermaine’s DJ set received an overwhelmingly positive response. The students, however, had strong opinions about Campus Safety and Schenectady Police shutting down the party early, which seems to be a recurring pattern across Union frats as of late.
“Jermaine did not disappoint, unfortunately campo (Campus Safety) did,” stated Kate Andre ’28 about the party being shut down.
Despite the short duration of his set, the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction caused Jermaine to be invited back to perform at a frat on April 18, 2026. This set also received a lot of love from Union students.
“I had a blast and would definitely do it again. Union is my family,” expressed Jermaine when asked about his plans to perform at Union frats again. From students’ positive feedback and Jermaine’s optimistic outlook, it is safe to assume that we will be seeing DJ ScabZ at Union’s frat houses again.
