Fans were left stunned when Onika Tanya Maraj, better known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, appeared at a major conservative political event, sparking debate across social media. The Trinidadian rapper spoke out at America Fest in December 2025, an annual conference that celebrates conservative values and features prominent speakers from the political and media landscape. The attendance of Minaj was a stark contrast to her past comments on Donald Trump and support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
America Fest was founded by Charlie Kirk and the 2025 Fest was the first major conservative event since his death. The attendance of Minaj sparked significant controversy on social media. She took the stage with Kirk’s widow and spoke about President Trump, stating, “He [Trump] has given so many people hope that there’s a chance to beat the bad guys and to win and to do it with your head held high.” Furthermore, the rapper made statements like, “Boys, be boys… It’s okay to be boys… There’s nothing wrong with being a boy,” which greatly surprised fans.
Minaj also appeared with Trump at the Accounts Summit, where she declared, “I am probably the president’s number one fan, and that’s not going to change.” She was also photographed holding hands with the president. Afterwards, she took to social media, posting images of her “Trump gold card,” which allows wealthy non-citizens to pay $1 million and a $15,000 processing fee in return for US residency.
She also attacked California Governor Gavin Newsom’s support for trans athletes, stating, “Imagine being the guy running on wanting to see trans kids. Not even a trans adult would run on that. Normal adults wake up & think they want to see healthy, safe, and happy kids.”
Why has this sparked so much controversy? Nicki Minaj has been an incredibly important figure as a Black woman and immigrant who defied barriers in her time. She was a known advocate for LGBTQIA+ and posted anti-Trump media in the past.
In 2018, she said, “I came to this country as an illegal immigrant; I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me at the age of 5. This is so scary to me. Please stop this.”
This statement was outwardly against Trump’s immigration policies at the time. Additionally, in the past, she has encouraged her gay fans to, “ be fighters and to be brave.” which greatly contrasts her more recent actions.
In conclusion, there has been speculation about why Minaj has changed her view—to gain her convicted brother and/or husband a presidential pardon, to earn a citizenship, or maybe just to stay relevant. Since her recent actions, she has lost a significant number of followers on social media and has deleted her account. Whether this marks a lasting shift in Minaj’s public identity or simply another headline-grabbing moment, the reaction from fans suggests the conversation surrounding her influence is far from over.
