In a tightly contested rivalry game at MVP Arena on January 24, the Union women’s hockey team captured its second straight Mayor’s Cup with a 4–3 victory over RPI. The win extended Union’s recent success and capped off an afternoon defined by momentum swings and sustained pressure.
Union seized control in the second period, generating offense through an aggressive forecheck and extended zone time. They scored twice in the period, including a power-play goal just before intermission that shifted the momentum firmly in their favour. Union outshot RPI 13–2 in the period.
RPI pushed back in the third period, applying sustained pressure and narrowing the deficit as the Engineers looked to claw their way back. Former Union forward Kendal Davidson led the push, scoring twice as RPI outshot Union 14–4 in the final period. Despite the surge, Union remained composed defensively and limited high-danger chances down the stretch.
Sophomore defenseman Peyton O’Neill played a key role on both ends of the ice, scoring her first collegiate goal and finishing with a team-best plus-three rating. In net, Monja Wagner made 22 saves and delivered several key stops late as RPI threatened to equalize. The performance marked Wagner’s final game before departing to represent Switzerland in the Olympics
Beyond individual performances, the victory reflected Union’s ability to control the pace and capitalize on key moments. Union’s four goals set a new high for a single team in the history of the women’s Mayor’s Cup and contributed to the highest scoring game the event has seen on the women’s side.
With the win, Union successfully defended the Mayor’s Cup and carried momentum back into ECAC play. Union looks to build on the result as they prepare for upcoming conference matchups against Brown and Yale.
