Union College Football faced winless Hilbert College last Saturday night in what turned out to be a commanding performance for the Dutchmen. The Hilbert College football program, which began competing in 2022, has yet to secure its first victory. Entering the matchup, Hilbert held an all-time record of 0–32, and Union showed no signs of allowing that streak to end.
Union came into the game as a clear favorite, and the team lived up to expectations. From the opening kickoff, the Dutchmen controlled the pace on both sides of the ball. The offense looked sharp, the defense stayed disciplined, and special teams consistently helped secure good field position. By halftime, Union had built a comfortable 24-point lead, setting the tone for the rest of the night. Senior captain and quarterback Patch Flanagan led the offensive effort, scoring two touchdowns and continuing to show why he is one of the most dependable players in the Liberty League.
Flanagan’s season numbers continue to impress. After the victory, he has now thrown for 1,473 passing yards and eleven touchdowns. One of his most memorable moments this season came in the first game against Susquehanna, when he completed a 99-yard touchdown pass. That play remains the longest completion of the year and a clear example of Flanagan’s strong arm and the team’s explosive offensive potential.

Union’s passing game has been one of the team’s biggest strengths this season. Senior wide receiver Gil Rivera has been one of Flanagan’s most consistent targets, recording 432 receiving yards and five touchdowns so far. His ability to make plays in crucial moments has helped the Dutchmen maintain momentum in close games. Alongside him, senior wide receiver Dan Quinn has also been a key part of the offense with 293 receiving yards. Quinn was the receiver who caught Flanagan’s 99-yard touchdown pass against Susquehanna, a play that showcased their connection and experience together on the field.
On the ground, junior running back Michael Dinardo has provided balance to Union’s offense. He has rushed for 282 yards this season and scored one touchdown. His strength and ability to pick up short-yardage gains have helped the team sustain long drives and control the tempo of games.
Union’s defense also continued to perform well in the victory. Sophomore linebacker John Droggitis leads the team with 27 solo tackles and 30 assists. His consistency and awareness have made him one of the most dependable players on defense. Freshman defensive back Trey Rezendes has also made an immediate impact this season, leading the team with two interceptions. The defense has shown a good mix of experienced leadership and promising young players who have stepped up when needed.
With the win against Hilbert, Union improved its record to 6–2 for the season. The team has shown steady growth and strong chemistry as the season has progressed. The Dutchmen will face the University of Rochester next Saturday in what is expected to be a much more competitive matchup. Rochester has challenged several top teams this season, and Union will need to stay focused and disciplined to keep its momentum going.
Still, Union College continues to look like one of the most balanced and confident teams in the Liberty League. With a strong offense, a disciplined defense, and reliable leadership from veteran players, the Dutchmen are well-positioned to make a deep run in the Liberty League Playoffs as the season enters its final stretch.
