Football: A trip to Geneva the team would soon like to forget ended in a 27-0 loss against the conference best, Hobart. Patch Flanagan threw for over 200 yards for the second time this season but also recorded two interceptions including one on the goal line. The team was able to move the ball through the air with Robbie Tolbert hauling in 6 catches for 72 yards and Gil Rivera bringing in 5 for 54 yards. For some reason the team has gotten away from their rushing identity from a year ago. The two headed monster of Michael Fiore and Jonathan Anderson who both rushed for over 1000 yards last year has seen their collective attempts drastically declined. Last year the tandem combined for 21 touchdowns while this year they only have 1. The team still has hope of finishing with a .500 record if they win out the rest of their Liberty League games as long as they can find their balance again. Catch the team’s next home game this weekend as they host Ithaca College at 12:00 on Saturday.
Soccer: The men’s team dropped a tight back and forth game against St. Lawrence on Wednesday afternoon. Union put the pressure on early but gave up the first goal after a hectic corner kick sequence. The second half started the same with Union offensive pressure but not able to get any shots to go and then they let up a second goal on an odd man rush. Just a few minutes later Gio Capellino scored on the assist from Justin Ely and Diego Pascual but that was followed shortly after by a crushing St. Lawrence goal. The last three minutes were filled with another SLU goal and a last minute goal from first-year Owen Everett for a final score of 2-4. A 1-1 draw was the result against RIT on Saturday. Nate Langlois scored the lone goal for Union early in the second half but a goal from RIT tied it up late in the game. Union still has a chance to make the playoffs but they need to win their last two games this week first. The women’s team dropped their only game of the week to RIT 0-1 this week but they still sit in a great spot to make the playoffs. They sit in 6th place tied with Clarkson who they will end their season with, and three points behind Skidmore who they will host this Wednesday. If they win both those games they will definitely have a playoff berth.
Field Hockey: The team continues their historic season with two more Liberty League wins and now sit tied for first place with Ithaca. The team has an all time high of 6 conference wins this season as they clinch the number 2 seed in the Liberty League tournament. With 3 more goals this week, Maddie Greco is now tied for 3rd in single season goals and is 6th for career goals. The team’s next home game is this Saturday at 5:00pm as they celebrate their seniors on Senior Day.
Volleyball: A 1-1 week from the Volleyball team sees them in 4th place in the conference and primed for a Liberty League tournament run. A tough loss to Clarkson on Wednesday finished 3 sets to 1 despite a late push from Union winning the 3rd set and forcing overtime in the 4th set. They turned it back around the next day sweeping St. Lawrence on their Senior day. Senior Farah Elgala recorded 3 kills on a season high of 12 total attempts as well as 2 blocks and an ace. First-year Georgia Pinciaro led the team in kills and Allie Kronenberg had another 30 plus assist game. The team has no more home games this season but they travel to William Smith this weekend for their last conference game.
Crew: The men’s and women’s teams concluded their fall season traveling to Pennsylvania for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The women’s Championship 8+ team that consisted of Melina McGovern, Sadie White, Olivia Anderson, Julia Cole, Lena Nowell, Sarah Hannan, Carly Thompson, Amy Gagliardi and Emma Friedman finished an impressive team best 5th out of 15. The 4+ boat finished 13th out of the 22 DIII teams and the 8+ Novice boat finished 6 out of 9. The men’s 4+ Novice boat finished 4th out of 6, the Championship 4+ boat finished 5th out of 11 and the Championship 8+ boat consisting of Sarah DeRosa, Sam Flynn, Nick Meyer, Danny Bender, Stuart Livingston, Tyler Perry, Wolfgang Bodge, Miles Fee and Alex Chan finished 7th out of 14 teams. Both teams will be back for their spring campaign in March.
Hockey: A dominant weekend from both the men and women as they each add 2 wins to their record. The men played RPI at their place Friday night winning 6-3 and at home on Saturday 4-3. There’s no love lost between these two teams as there were 12 penalties in the first game including two RPI majors. Union was able to capitalize on the power play opportunities as Colby MacArthur and Ben Muthersbaugh each scored 2 goals with the extra man. Parker Lindauer recorded 3 assists including one to Carter Korpi who finished the game with an empty netter. Saturday’s game was absolutely packed with Union faithful. The game was back and forth as Union’s Brandon Buhr strikes in the first 2 minutes of the game followed a minute later by an RPI goal. John Prokop scores next for Union off a backside tip in. The next goal didn’t come until the 3rd period when RPI took advantage of a power play and then took the lead on a 1 timer. A media timeout gave Union coach Josh Hauge the opportunity to fire up his players leading to a tying goal on the next Union power play from Josh Nixon. Ben Muthersbaugh scored the game winning goal not long after which was met with a roar of applause from the 2000 people in Messa Rink. The women notched two conference wins against Harvard and Dartmouth 3-0 and 2-1 respectively. Impressive takeover performance from first-year Karianne Engelbert who scored the first hat-trick of her career against Harvard getting a goal in all three periods. Dartmouth scored first on Saturday to go up 1-0 in the first period. Union controlled the time of possession and out shot their opponent which finally paid off in the 3rd period when Stephanie Bourque buried a power play goal from deep. Jill Willis broke the tie later in the game off a rebound to win 2-1. Maddie Leaney had a hockey assist on both goals as she leads the team with 6 total. The team will take a two day trip to central New York this week to play Cornell and Colgate.
