Football: Highlighting Breast Cancer Awareness week and Homecoming weekend was the Football team finally getting back into the win column with a sound victory over conference opponent Buffalo State. They dominated the line of scrimmage amassing over 200 yards on the ground and holding their opponent to 67 rush yards. Quarterback Patch Flanagan led off the scoring with a rushing touchdown followed by a 2 point conversion. Late in the 2nd quarter Flanagan finds receiver Tommy Leonard for his only catch of the day but longest of the season bringing in a 29 yard touchdown. The team continued to air it out as Gil Rivera hauls in his longest catch of the season and first touchdown in a Union uniform to go up 21-3 in the final seconds of the first half. The only points from Union in the 3rd quarter came from first year Francesco Pileggi’s season long 37 yard field goal. Union’s 2000 yard rusher Michael Fiore finally reaches the end zone for the first time all season to reach a final score of 31-10. The team will look to ride this positive momentum next week as they travel to the top team in the liberty league, Hobart.
Soccer: Both Men’s and Women’s teams went 1-1 this weekend. The women kick off the slate with a massive win against the number #9 ranked Ithaca who is also first place in the liberty league. It was a defensive battle all game with 6 saves and a shutout for goalie Maya Koster. The tie lasted until the 80th minute until Hannah Sams launched a bomb past the Bomber’s goalkeeper and won the game 1-0. Sunday’s game against William Smith saw a first half goal from the Herons. Sam Friedman tied up the game halfway through the second on the assist from Taylor Bovardi who are the top two point leaders on the team but a William Smith goal followed soon after for a final score of 1-2. The Men’s team also played Ithaca on Saturday coming away with a 1-0 win. First-year Nate Langlois nets one early in the game and despite 4 yellow cards Union was able to hold off the Bombers attack for the rest of the game. On Sunday they dropped a tough 0-2 game at Hobart despite outshooting the Statesmen. Show out to College Park Field Wednesday 23rd at 4:30 for the Men’s Athletes for Athletes game against St. Lawrence.
Field Hockey: The Field Hockey team started the weekend with another huge Liberty League win against Vassar. Junior Megan Dorsey had a hand in all three goals scored in the 3-0 victory with a goal and two assists. On Sunday Union stretched their win streak to 5 as they beat cross town rival RPI in a 4-2 final. Molly Halliday opened up that game with a goal less than a minute in which got the team rolling. Maddie Greco continues to move up in the record books as she scores the next two moving her into 10th for career goals and 8th for single season goals. They host St. Lawrence this coming Friday as they look to hold on to 1st place in the Liberty League.
Volleyball: The Volleyball team gets another league victory beating Bard 3-0 on Wednesday with an overall dominating performance. Maddie McCarron recorded 9 kills alongside Shannon McGrath, Shelby McKim and Georgia Pinciaro who each had 7. Allie Kronenberg continues to set up her teammates everywhere with another 33 assists and Georgia Pool continues to hold down the defensive side with 17 digs. They dropped the first of their two matches on Saturday 2-3 against Vassar in only their second 5 set match of the season. They bounced back in the afternoon with another 3-0 victory over SUNY Cobleskill. In her 4th appearance of the season, First-year Melody Herrin led the team in blocks. Make sure to pack the Viniar Center next Friday for the team’s Athletes for Athletes game as they host Clarkson at 7:00pm.
Cross Country: The Men’s and Women’s teams traveled to the Connecticut College Invitational this past week. The Men’s team placed 19th out of 35 teams and the Women placed 22nd out of 37 teams. Seniors led the way again as Cat Dacey ran a 21:34.1 in the 6k race to finish 14th. Ryan Russell and Ben Neff both broke the top 100 running 24:37.5 and 25:25.4 to finish 15th and 62nd respectively. Both teams will now look to prepare for Liberty League Championships.
Hockey: The Women dropped two tight games at New Hampshire this weekend 1-2 and 0-1. Emma Fulawka scored the only goal of the weekend as the team got out shot 29-16 in the first matchup. They just couldn’t get anything going as UNH controlled the time of possession despite Union having the edge in the faceoff battle. The second game on Saturday was back and forth with Union getting a lot of quality chances but they just couldn’t get anything past the UNH goaltender. A disappointing rebound popped right over Sophie Matsoukas after her diving cross crease save to go down 0-1. They look to turn around this streak of games with an upcoming stretch of ECAC opponents. The Men’s team got two decisive wins over Mercyhurst in front of the packed Homecoming and parents weekend crowd as they continue the strong start to their season. Mercyhurst opened the scoring with a powerplay goal but after that it was all Union. First-year Ben Muthersbaugh buries a one timer from Brandon Buhr and on the ensuing face-off, gets the puck again, beats the defender at the blue line and rifles his second past the Laker goaltender. Parker Lindauer scores the next goal off a give and go tip-in from first-year Lucas Buzziol. Nate Hanley buried two goals in the third off two crease feeds as he leads the team in scoring. Muthersbaugh then completed the hat-trick off another one-timer to finish the game 6-2. He was named ECAC forward and Rookie of the week for his outstanding performance. Mercyhurst capitalized on a powerplay to score first in the second game but excellent execution by Union on two powerplays led to both Drew Sutton and Brandon Buhr getting their first goals of the season. The Lakers scored next in the third but less than a minute later Josh Nixon buried a five-hole goal to win the game 3-2. Next week the team plays back to back games against cross-town rival RPI both home and away.
