When I received my acceptance letter for Union College, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief and excitement wash over me. It was the only U.S. college I had managed to secure admission into, and little did I know that this would be the start of an unforgettable journey. Choosing Union College was not a decision I took lightly. I had applied to several universities, each with its unique appeal but Union stood out in more ways than one. Initially disheartened, I contemplated an entirely different path – one that would have led me across the Atlantic to Europe. When I received the acceptance letter, it felt like a lifeline. It was not just an admission; it was an opportunity, a chance to pursue higher education in the United States.
My first-year experience at Union College was filled with a multitude of emotions, challenges, and most importantly personal growth. As a junior now, looking back on my journey, I can’t help but reflect on the moments that made this year truly remarkable.
A Welcoming Community
From the moment I set foot onto campus, I was greeted by friendly faces eager to help me navigate the unfamiliar terrain. Whether it was the smiles in the dining hall or the willingness of professors to go the extra mile in helping me understand complex topics, I never felt like just a number. Instead, I felt like a valued member of a vibrant academic community. The sense of belonging was immediate and I quickly discovered that Union College was more than just an institution; it was a home away from home.
Facing Challenges Head-on
The excitement of starting college and stepping into a new chapter of life was coupled with a tinge of uncertainty. While the current first years are busy making plans for their freshman year, my fellow Union classmates and I were bracing ourselves for an academic journey marred by COVID-19 restrictions. The stark contrast between our experience and that of the incoming freshman class is undeniable. Our campus was a far cry from the bustling hub of social activities it once was. The cherished traditions and gatherings, which were supposed to be a significant part of our college experience were replaced with social distancing, face masks, and countless Zoom meetings. The vibrant college town we were promised became a quieter, more cautious place. Nevertheless to say that our first year lacked the freedom that previous generations of students enjoyed would be an understatement.
While the pandemic cast a shadow over our first year, it also illuminated the resilience and adaptability of the community. The limitations imposed by COVID-19 forced us to find creative ways to connect, learn and grow. Our class developed a bond, one forged in the crucible of uncertainty and change. We found creative ways to connect, using virtual platforms to build friendships and support one another. The absence of traditional events encouraged us to create new traditions, celebrating birthdays and milestones with online gatherings, etc. Moreover, we gained a newfound appreciation for the little things – face-to-face conversations, a crowded library, and the simple joy of sharing a meal with friends in the dining halls. As I look back on my first year at Union College, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride in what we accomplished in the face of adversity.
One of the most significant highlights of my first year was enrolling in a 300-level course as a freshman; PSC-354 Human Rights and Immigration. While this might sound daunting to some (was for me), it turned out to be the best class I have taken at Union so far. It was the kind of class that left me anticipating each lecture, diving deep into thought-provoking discussions, and spending countless hours studying, not out of necessity but out of sheer curiosity.
This course challenged me academically in ways I had never experienced before, but it also showed me the immense potential that lies within when one is pushed beyond their limits. It was in Professor Cidam’s classroom that I learned the true value of intellectual curiosity and the rewards of pursuing knowledge for its own sake.
A Glimpse into the Future
Reflecting on my journey so far, I realize that had I not ended up at Union College, I would have missed out on a life-changing experience. While it may not have been my initial plan, it has proven to be the right path for me. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the path we didn’t plan for can lead us to the most incredible destinations. As I continue my journey toward graduation, I am grateful for the unexpected twist that brought me here, and I eagerly anticipate the adventures that lie ahead. Union College is not just a place of learning; it is a place of growth, transformation, and endless possibilities and I am proud to call it my alma mater.
