Yearly Clery Report Release Outlines Helpful Information on Student Safety

Michael Rosenbaum, Co-Editor-in-Chief

Campus Safety’s annual release of their Safety and Security Report was published including statistics from 2019 through 2021. The report includes statistics on reported crime at Union over several years as well as the legal definition that the school, including the offices of Campus Safety, Title IX, and Community Standards use.

Union’s record of safety is, as noted by the report, exceptionally good. Furthermore crime has been, in general, trending down since 2019. The number of rapes on campus declined sharply, and given the currently know statistics, seem to have remained low. There was previously a concern that Fall of 2021 might have been a “double red zone” as a consequence of knock-on effects due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conversely, the number of instances of dating violence and aggravated assault sharply rose, with the majority of both offenses committed in residential facilities.

The report also included many guidelines helpful for students to know when confronted with various incidents. Included in the report are several resources that students can use to their benefit. These include numbers for various campus resources and campus affiliates. It also includes information on the Student Bill of rights both for NY State and for Community Standard investigations.
