On Saturday, April 17th, the Union College Men’s Lacrosse team stunned the visiting Vassar Brewers with a resounding 19-5 victory at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna Class of 1985 Stadium. With Saturday afternoon’s victory over Vassar, the Dutchmen remain undefeated.

Leading the Dutchmen offense on Saturday, junior Peter Burnes ’22 led the team with a career-best four goals, caused two turnovers, and added five ground balls. Union started strong with junior Brian Davis ’22 leading all players with four assists, junior Jack Donahue ’22 scoring three goals, and senior Hayden Frey ’21 contributing two goals and one assist.

Right from the start of the first quarter, Union asserted itself and scored five goals before Vassar managed to put points on the board. Jack Donahue ’22  and Peter Burnes ’22 scored twice each during the early run. Following Vassar’s first goal, senior Chris Kelly ’21 quickly responded with his first collegiate goal only 11 seconds after Vassar. A last-minute goal by Hayden Frey ’21, with
four seconds left, gave the Dutchmen a comfortable 7-2 lead heading into the second frame.

Throughout the ensuing quarters, Union continued to dominate as they outshot Vassar 46-12. Notable game highlights included a slew of four straight goals from junior Keaton McCann ’21 and two from Burnes in the second frame. Additionally, sophomore Cole Hartman ’23 and first-years Nate Sidel ’24 and Clayton Acuri ’24 saw action in the fourth quarter, each scoring their first collegiate goals, extending Union’s lead. Junior Sam Byrne ’22 also had a good day, winning 18-of-23 faceoffs and securing a game-high 14 ground balls.

Union’s 19-5 victory over Liberty League rival Vassar elevated Union’s ranking to #8 with further ranking improvements expected as the season continues. The Dutchmen return to play on Wednesday, April 21 st, with an away makeup game at Ithaca College.
