The Union women’s tennis team won its second straight Liberty League victory on Saturday afternoon, securing a 7-2 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology at the RIT Tennis Courts. The Dutchwomen swept all six singles matches, contributing to their 6-2 win.

Notable highlights of Saturday’s exploits included a rousing rally by senior Megan Brown ’21  and sophomore Marilena Karadimou ’23. Both young ladies combined for three of Union’s seven wins for the day. The duo earned Union’s first point with an 8-5 victory at first doubles, then followed up by Megan Brown winning 6-2, 6-1 at first singles. Marilena Karadimou
contributed 6-3 and 6-4 successes during the second flight.

Recovering from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play, Union recaptured control from RIT in the singles competition. Where they won four matches in straight sets and two more in super tiebreakers to clinch the Liberty League win. At fourth singles, first-year Gracie Nicol ’24 tied the match at two with a 6-6, 6-3 win. Additional victories and contributions came from sophomore Sophie Brown’s ’23 6-3, 6-1 third-singles victory, junior Dana D’Onofrio ’22, and senior Cathy Xing’s ’21 contributions to Union’s margin of victory. D’Onofrio outlasted her opponent in a fifth-singles tiebreaker, 7-6, 2-5, while Xing defeated her opponent at sixth singles, 6-2, 4-6.

Union women’s tennis returns to the courts on April 16, where they will host the opposing Skidmore Thoroughbreds. After a year hiatus, it appears the Dutchwomen are emerging as a strong Liberty League Championships contender and look to make this a successful season by continuing their undefeated streak.
