From April 30 to May 3, Sigma Delta Tau will host philanthropy events all week during ‘Pass the Torch Week.’
All proceeds collected during the week will go to Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA). The mission of Prevent Child Abuse America is to prevent the abuse and neglect ofall children in the United States.
By 2010, over 20,000 American children were believed to have been killed in their own homes by family members, and United States Child Protective Agencies find over 700,000 victims of child maltreatment annually.
Prevent Child Abuse America’s services are dedicated to improving child-well being in all 50 states and they personally help over 100,000 families annually.
Sigma Delta Tau at Union supports PCAA because the sorority recognizes that every day individuals have an opportunity to help create the kind of nation they want to live in, one free of child abuse.
Sigma Delta Tau also recognizes that when children don’t have equal opportunities for healthy growth and development, the future of society becomes at risk.
Thus, with April being National Prevent Child Abuse Awareness Month, the sisters of Sigma Delta Tau at Union started the campaign for PCAA.
Through ‘Pass the Torch Week,’ Sigma Delta Tau hopes to raise extensive funds for PCAA, in order for them to continue their work throughout our nation.
The symbol of Sigma Delta Tau is the Torch, which represents the sisterhood and the motto. ‘Pass the Torch Week’ is intended to increase involvement on campus while also raising funds. The events are scheduled as follows.
Monday: Sweat for PCAA. This will involve a 5k run around Union’s campus. Registering will take place in Reamer the week before. There is just a $5 registration fee.
Tuesday: Puppies and Pizza. Sigma Delta Tau will sell pizza to continue raising funds for PCAA. This event will also include therapy dogs.
Wednesday: Cornhole Tournament at Sigma Delta Tau (Raymond House North). There is a $10 fee per team of two, and you must register a week in advance. This will get you three games of cornhole. There will be a gift card prize to the winning team.
Thursday: Carnival games. One of the activities will be Pie a Sig Delt. The cost is $3 for one pie and $5 for two. A dunk tank will also be set up outside Reamer. The cost is $5 per dunk.
Friday: BBQ at Sigma Delta Tau (Raymond House North). The cost is $5 a ticket. Food will be served.
The events, which are also being sponsored by several fraternities, will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. each night.
The sisters of Sigma Delta Tau want to invite and involve the entire campus community to participate in this first annual ‘Pass the Torch Week.’
