Men’s Lacrosse falls in second round of NCAA tournament

On Wednesday night, the Men’s Lacrosse team made their 2019 NCAA Division III Lacrosse Championship debut. The Dutchmen faced SUNY Cortland in the second round of the tournament.

SUNY Cortland scored the first two goals of the game, taking an early lead. The Dragons did not hold the lead for long as Keaton McCann ’21 opened scoring for the Dutchmen.

His goal was followed by another goal made by Michael Sands ’20 who had an assist from Aidan Flood ’21. The game was tied at 2-2 before Cortland managed to sneak in another goal in the last three minutes of play of the first quarter.

The Dutchmen bounced back in the second quarter, scoring on five different occasions. Kieran McGovern ’21 scored back to back goals giving the lead to the Dutchmen.

Michael Sands ’20 found his way to the net and less than two minutes later, and McGovern scored again. McCann was the third scorer for the Dutchman in the frame.

The Dutchmen had a four-point lead over the Dragons. With seven seconds left in the first half, Courtland scored. At half-time, the score was 4-7 with Union leading.

SUNY Cortland did not score in the third quarter, but the Dutchmen were able to score twice with goals from Jack Kaufman ’20 and McCann.

The Dragons scored early in the fourth quarter as they scored in the first 50 seconds of play.

A string of three unanswered goals from the Dutchmen furthered their lead. Scoring for the Dutchmen were Flood, McCann with an assist from Sands and Kerry Lyne ‘20.

With a little over two and half minutes left in play, SUNY Cortland scored twice but it was not enough for them to catch up with the Dutchmen. The final score of the game was 7-12.

With the win, the Dutchmen advance to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the third time in school history.

The Dutchmen faced the number one seed in the nation, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Saturday night. The Dutchmen unfortunately lost to a close score of 9-10, ending their 2019 season.
