Men’s Lacrosse team beats St. Lawrence in overtime

This past Saturday, the Men’s Lacrosse team versed no. 18 St. Lawrence University. The Dutchmen won in a thrilling game that went into overtime.

Union scored the first goal of the game in a man-up situation from Keaton McCann ’21 who was assisted by John Edmonds ’19. St. Lawrence was quick to respond as they scored four minutes later. The first stanza finished with a tied score of 1-1.

The Dutchmen extended their lead in the second stanza. Hayden Frey ’21 made it a 2-1 game at the seven-minute mark. 15 seconds later, Michael Sands ’20 scored another goal with an assist from Frey ’21 and Frey ’21 scored another unassisted goal a minute later.

St. Lawrence’s Jack Hennessey ’21 attempted to close the gap in the score but the Dutchmen did not allow it. Hennessey’s goal was answered with a goal from Michael Sands ’20 who was assisted by Quinn Helmig ’21 and Keaton McCann added another goal with an assist from Brain Davis ’21. St. Lawrence scored two more goals before the ending first half. The first half ended with a score of 6-4 with the Dutchmen in the lead.

St. Lawrence played a strong second half as they stole the lead from the Dutchmen. The Saints scored a string of 4 goals in a row, giving them the 8-6 lead.

Their lead did not last long as the Dutchmen took back their lead. Kieran McGovern ’21 scored the first goal to close the gap. He was followed by Hayden Frey ’21 who scored with an assist from Eric Zimm ’20.

Kieran McGovern ’21 scored another goal with 40 seconds left in the third stanza, giving the Dutchmen the lead once again. The score was now 9-8.

The Saints opened the fourth quarter with two unanswered goals given them the 10-9 lead. Kerry Lyne ’20 tied the game at the seven-minute mark but the Saints took their lead back a couple of minutes later.

With only three minutes left in the game, Keaton McCann ’21 retied the game with an assist from John Edmonds ’19. With an 11-11 score at the end of the fourth, both teams we forced to go into overtime.

Alex Newhouse ’19 won the face-off in overtime. Josh Willis ’20 had possession of the ball and attempted to score but the shot just missed the cage.

Kieran McGovern ’21 picked up the ground ball and scored the game-winning goal just under two minutes into overtime.

Highlights of this game include Jack Santilli ’19 making 11 saves and the Dutchmen outshooting the Saints 40-36. Union improves 10-1 overall and 4-0 in Liberty League play.

The players return to action next week as they take on no. 16 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York at 6 p.m.
