Women’s lacrosse wins last game against Vassar College

On Saturday, April 28, the women’s lacrosse team won their final game of the season against Vassar.

Hannah Rosenberger ’19 opened scoring the Dutchwomen as she scored in the first 40 seconds of play.

From that moment forward, Union led the game. Kellie Cronin ’19 and Lindsay Gerrato ’21 each scored a point to give the Dutchwomen a 3-0 lead over Vassar.

Vassar scored their first goal around the 10-minute mark, but Union was quick to respond as Rosenberger scored again for Union. Vassar scored three more times in the first half to up their goals to four.

Gerrato and Rosenberger both scored two more times in the first half to end with a score of 4-8.

The Dutchwomen extended their lead by two more points early on in the second half.The game was now 10-4 with goals from Ramsey Walsh ’19.

Walsh had an assist from Rosenberger, who also had a scoring piece.

Vassar began to close the gap in the scores by scoring a string of four goals in a row to make it an 8-10 game.

Walsh scored the final goal for Union with an assist from Isabel Bush ’21, resulting in a final score of 9-11.

Highlights of this game include Ellie Taney ’20 making 11 saves, six of them in the first half, allowing Union to build a strong lead.

Rosenberger had a career-high of five goals and Gerrato scored three times and controlled 10 draws.

The Dutchwomen end their season 8-7 and 5-5 in the Liberty League. The Dutchwomen were in a three-way tie for fifth in conference standings, but lost the tiebreaker to Vassar and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Despite not making the Liberty League tournament, the Dutchwomen were able to celebrate their second win in a row and their senior class, who completed their collegiate careers.

The senior class is comprised of Cronin, Elena Driscoll, Megan Fitzgerald, Emma Lowrey, Julia Pfohl, Rosenberger and Walsh.

The women’s lacrosse team ended the season with an 8-7 win-loss record which calculates to a positive winning percentage of .533.

This is a big improvement from last year’s record of 3-11 and winning percentage of .214.

The Dutchwomen finished with a Liberty League Conference record of 5-5.

This is also a big improvment from last year’s conference record of 3-7.

Highlights of this include midfielder Grace Heiting ’22 being honored as Liberty League Rookie of the Week on March 18.

Heiting is from Woodbury, Minnesota and graduated from Gentry Academy where she recieved MVP and All Conference Honors.

The team looks to build on this young talent as they attempt to cultivate a playoff-contention team in the years to come.
