Men’s lacrosse defeated by Liberty League rival RIT

The Men’s lacrosse team faced nationally ranked number one seed Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Wednesday, April 24. RIT walked away with the win in a 12-9 game.

RIT scored the first two goals of the game to gain a 2-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Keaton McCann ’21 opened the scoring for the Dutchmen with a goal in the last minute and a half of the first quarter.

Brian Davis ’21 tied the game by scoring the first goal in the second quarter. The Tigers were quick to regain their lead, but it did not last long as Jack Sullivan ’19 retied the game at 3-3. RIT then scored again, leading 4-3 going into the half.

Opening the second half, RIT was quick to score two more goals extending their lead to 6-3 over the Dutchmen. Sullivan then scored another goal for Union to make it a 6-4 game.

The Tigers were quick to respond as they scored another two goals gaining an 8-4 lead. Union made a comeback in the back half of the third quarter as McCann, Hayden Frey ’21 and Davis each scored one goal in less than three minutes of play.

Coming off this momentum, the Dutchmen had possession of the ball with a chance to tie, but a turnover allowed for RIT to score twice . Aidan Flood ’21 scored for the Dutchmen in an attempt to decrease the gap in the score, but RIT scored in the last 10 seconds to make it an 11-8 game going into the final stanza.

In the final quarter, both teams only scored once. McCann scored in the first two and a half minutes while RIT scored in the final two and half minutes, leading to their victory.

Jack Santilli ’19 made seven saves for the Dutchmen and Alex Newhouse ’19 won 12 of 24 faceoffs. RIT outshot the Dutchmen 35-31.

The Dutchmen return to action May 1 for the Liberty League Tournament semifinals against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium
