Men’s Hockey defeats Princeton Tigers in close 3-2 match

This past weekend, the Men’s Hockey Team took on Princeton University at Messa Rink. In what seemed to be a game going into overtime, forward Liam Morgan ’21 netted the puck in the final 15 seconds of play giving the Dutchmen a 3-2 win over the Tigers.

It was a scoreless first period for both the Tigers and Dutchmen. The Tigers out-shot the Dutchmen, 13-7 and goalie Darion Hanson ’21 did not allow for a single puck to enter the net.

The second period began with a man-up advantage for Union as Princeton’s Christian O’Neill ’22 received a penalty. Brett Supinski ’19 also won the first face-off of the period against Ryan Kuffner ’19, giving Union possession of the puck.

The Dutchmen attempted to take advantage of the situation, but they were unable to score against the Tigers. Princeton’s Ryan Kuffner ’19 scored the first goal of the night as he scored shorthanded at the 4:47 mark in the period.

Union responded back seven minutes later with a goal from Liam Morgan ’21 who had an assist from Cole Maier ’19. Liam Morgan ’21 and Cole Maier ’19 were joined on the ice with teammates Ryan Walker ’19, Ryan Sidorski ’22 and Greg Campbell ’19. The period ended with a score of 1-1 and the Dutchmen out-shoot the Tigers 8-3.

Half-way through the third period, Brett Supinski ’19 lost the face-off against Jake Paganelli ’21.

Princeton held possession of the puck until forward Josh Kosack ’21 stole the puck from a Princeton defenseman and gave Union its first lead of the night with a 2-1 game. Kosack ’21 was on the ice with teammates Zachary Emelifeonwu ’20, Fletcher Fineman ’22, Taylor Brierley ’21, and Sean Harrison ’21.

In the remaining four minutes of the play, Princeton was in power play due to a penalty being called on Josh Kosack ’21. Cole Maier ’19 lost face off against Jackson Cressey ’20 and Princeton’s Max Véronneau ’19 tied the game 2-2.

The game appeared to be heading into overtime until Cole Maier ’19 won the faceoff against Alex Riche ’19. Ryan Walker ’19 had possession of the puck and gave it to Cole Maier ’19 who then passed it to Liam Morgan ’21.

Liam Morgan ’21 was able to finish the play and won the game for Union in the final 15 seconds of the night.

Union improved to a 15-9-6 season with an 8-8-2 record in the conference. They are currently two games behind Clarkson and Harvard who are tied for fourth in the league.

Next weekend, the Dutchmen will be on the final road trip of the regular season as they take on Colgate and Cornell with both games to begin at 7 p.m..
