Union College’s Women’s Hockey team hosted the annual Ice Breaker Tournament at M&T Bank Center, featuring four teams: Wisconsin, the University of Vermont, Saint Anselm, and Union College.
Heading into the tournament, Union held a 3-1-2 record. Vermont entered the weekend with a 1-2-1 record, led by standout players such as freshman defenseman Sophia DeAnzeris and Finland native sophomore forward Ooana Havana, who currently leads the team in both goals and points. Saint Anselm came in at 3-2-0, with senior forward Brooklyn Schneiderhan serving as both their leading goal scorer and point leader. The top-ranked team in the nation, Wisconsin, arrived with a dominant 6-0-0 record and an impressive roster featuring freshman forward Maggie Scannell, fifth-year forward Lacey Eden, and senior forward Kirsten Simms; Eden and Simms are currently tied for the team’s point lead.
Union opened the tournament strong, defeating Saint Anselm in a high-scoring 7-5 matchup to advance to the finals. Freshman forward Megan Duplantie netted two goals, while junior Mikayla Blomquist, junior Emma Fulawka, sophomore Karianne Engelbert, junior Maddie Leaney, and senior Greta Kropp each added one. Wisconsin, meanwhile, secured its finals spot with an 8-1 victory over Vermont.
In the championship game, Union faced off against powerhouse Wisconsin. Despite falling 4-0, the Union delivered a strong performance, standing their ground against the nation’s best team. Union’s run to the finals showcased the team’s growth and resilience, suggesting that the 2025–2026 season could be one of the program’s most competitive yet, with the potential to pose a serious challenge to opponents in the playoffs.
