Looking for something to do on the weekends? Each Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Schenectady Greenmarket takes over Jay Street and the roads surrounding City Hall. Local farmers, bakers, artists, and more vendors fill the streets to sell handmade and handgrown goods. It hosts over 60 vendors, each bringing their unique flair. With the combination of local New York State businesses, Union Students, Schenectady residents, and more, the Greenmarket is the best way to not only support our local community but also be a part of an all-encompassing Schenectady event.
Union College and Schenectady residents often experience a divide, but each Sunday, this divide becomes blurred. The market has been in operation since 2008 and remains a staple for the community and college students. When walking around the market, all communities mesh as one Schenectady collective.
In addition, the market provides benefits to the community, such as taking EBT for fresh and healthier produce for those who cannot afford it. It offers a “food box program” that sells fresh produce for only $10 to accommodate lower-income families. Furthermore, surplus food is regularly donated to the City Mission of Schenectady.
The Greenmarket also offers “community tables” that give local organizations a platform. This is not only a fantastic experience for these smaller businesses, but it is also a key part of supporting the Schenectady community.
As you walk into the market, you can smell the various types and cultures of food and see the bright, vibrant colors of the fresh organic produce. There are opportunities to get to meet new people and indulge in products that small business owners pour their heart into. From vendors to farmer market attendees, there is a friendly atmosphere where conversations are encouraged. The Greenmarket truly encompasses the heart of Schenectady.
The Schenectady Greenmarket has been a standing event in the community through the ever-changing years. Although the area is typically divided by its “college town” area and neighborhoods, the market is a common ground where people can come together.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out Schenectady’s Greenmarket, it’s an essential place to visit at least once during your time at Union. To experience a real sense of community, maybe consider buying a thing or two.
