Union College Field Hockey has opened its 2025 season with an impressive 6-4 record, highlighted by back-to-back 10-1 victories over Ramapo and William Paterson. Despite two of their losses against #23 MIT and #10 Wesleyan in overtime, they have proven they can compete with the best. This win helps the team in their search for an NCAA Tournament bid, and with a great performance against ranked opponents, it should help their chances. Their last game broke a program record this season with senior goalie Sophie Brady becoming the all-time leader in wins with her 21st against Ithaca. The previous record of 30 wins had stood since 1989.
Head coach Kelly Harchetts, now in her 14th season, has guided the team to sustained success and hit a major milestone of 100 career wins. She has brought in notable players to contribute to the team’s success, including junior Maddie Greco, who was the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year last season, who is also a two-sport athlete. She currently has 12 goals, totalling 26 points, and had a hat trick against Ramapo. In an interview, she said the reason for the success in the program is that “Coach Harchetts has put all of her faith into me, which I really appreciate,” Greco said. “I wouldn’t be anywhere without her help.” She also said the support she receives from her teammates is a main cause of her success.
Greco described the foundation of this supportive culture as being from their motto, where “everyone is one small part, like what makes us one unit. Every player is a part of the team and has a role, from being a new freshman to a veteran senior.”
Greco also stated that Coach Harchetts shows her support even during her lacrosse season. “Every time I have a lacrosse game, she texts me good luck before the game, and whatever the score is after the game, she texts ‘hey, great win’ or ‘tough loss’.” With strong leadership, a tight-knit team culture, and standout performances from players like Greco and Brady, field hockey is poised to make a postseason push and may have a chance at an NCAA Tournament bid.
