There are over 100 organizations at Union, like intramural sports, cultural alliances, and, of course, the lovely Concordiensis. The Union community got to see these organizations in action at the club fair in early September. Many students enjoy having organizations where they can follow their interests outside of the classroom. In addition to the organizations that have been active at Union for a while, a new organization has emerged. It is called HERizon.
This is an organization specifically for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) women so that they have a place to feel comfortable and united. One of the co-founders, Bela Espinoza ‘27, stated that she wanted to start this organization in order to create a safe space for BIPOC women, socially and professionally. Another co-founder, Natalie Pinto ‘27, said that this organization should have existed at Union a long time ago.
HERizon recently had its first meeting and only received positive feedback. Members got to enjoy the space, and the organization’s values were more than achieved. BIPOC women were filled with joy and felt a connection they may not have had before.
The founders of HERizon stated that through mentorship, resources, and constant encouragement, they support one another in academics, careers, and personal growth, turning challenges into opportunities. They use their potential struggles as something to motivate them to succeed. One of their goals is to come together and create roles that help and inspire one another. Additionally, members want to make sure that each individual knows how to support and advocate for themselves.
HERizon is a long-anticipated organization that is guaranteed to make a difference at Union. Having this space for BIPOC women is more than necessary and bound to help them feel safe, important, and united. The organization meets every Friday at 5:30 P.M. in Reamer 301. This is an exciting new chapter for Union that will support BIPOC women in every aspect.
