The field hockey team has shown both promise and resilience in the opening weeks of the 2025 season, mixing dominant offensive performances with hard-fought battles against nationally ranked opponents.
Union opened the year with a 2-1 road victory at Castleton before running into one of the nation’s best in #4 Williams, falling 4-0. The team bounced back with a pair of explosive outings, including a 9-0 rout of Russell Sage and a standout effort from sophomore Adela Vytopilova, who posted a five-point day in a win at Morrisville.
Union’s ability to score in bunches was on display in those games, with contributions from across the lineup, including first-years Ellie Innes and Katelyn Birnbaum. Senior leadership and emerging young talent have combined to give Union an offensive edge that they hope to sustain as the season continues.
At the same time, Union has shown it can go toe-to-toe with ranked competition. In back-to-back overtime contests, they fell just short against #10 Wesleyan and #23 MIT. Both games highlighted the team’s defensive grit, even if closing out games remains a challenge.
Looking ahead, the key for Union will be consistency. If the offense continues to generate scoring chances and the defense holds steady, they have the potential to turn near-misses into victories. With momentum building and depth throughout the roster, they aim to prove they can contend in the highly competitive Liberty League.
