Union College Football went on the road to face Susquehanna, ranked fourth in the nation, for its season opener. Union College football had a tough season last year with a 3-7 record and a 0-6 record in away games. But on a positive note, the Garnet Chargers started the 2024 season with a 3-1 record. This season will see Coach Drach in his second season as the head coach for Union College. Coach Drach has a history of improving teams with his leadership, having taken over 0-10 Wilkes University. During his six-year tenure with Wilkes University, Coach Drach led the team to four consecutive winning seasons, earning the program its first postseason win in 17 years. Before his time as a head coach, he served for eleven years as a quarterback coach and offensive coordinator for Hobart University.
His coaching ability for the offense was shown last game against Susquehanna in a record-breaking play. During the first quarter of the first drive of the 2025 season, on their own one-yard line, Union College Senior Quarterback Patch Flanagan threw to Senior Wide Receiver Dan Quin near the sidelines. Senior Wide Receiver Dan Quin broke off a tackle near the sidelines and ran all the way to the endzone for a 99-yard passing play. The passing play made a record in Union College Football with the longest passing touchdown, and tied the longest play in the program’s history. The two seniors could be a strong connection for the football team and be competition for other defenses in the Liberty League. The offense eventually scored its second touchdown, which would be the last offensive score in the game. Union College eventually lost the game by a score of 14-33, but the 99-yard play shows that if Union’s offense gets hot this year, it could be a real danger for the rest of the teams in the Liberty League.
