Football: A dominant win by the Football team this weekend against Rochester on Senior Day. The game started slow, with both teams held scoreless through the first quarter. Union’s offense came alive in the second quarter as quarterback Patch Flanagan hit Gil Rivera for two touchdowns on back to back drives. The first went for 45 yards with just 1:25 remaining in the quarter and the second a 56-yard bomb only seconds before halftime. The latter set a new career long for both players as they went into halftime up 13-0. Running back Jonathan Anderson was the workhorse of the second drive to start the half with 5 carries during the no huddle offense and rushing into the endzone for his first touchdown of the season. Union continued to attack through the air as Flanagan found Robbie Tolbert for a score to go up 27-0 heading into the fourth. After Rochester scores the next touchdown and misses the extra point they get the ball in plus territory and Michael Fiore gets involved in the scoring running right up the middle to put the team up 34-6. Rochester scored in the final minute to end the game 34-13. A handful of guys had career days. Quarterback Patch Flanagan reached a career high 325 yards and 3 touchdowns earning him Liberty League Offensive Player of the Week. On the other side of the ball linebacker Cole DaSilva recorded a career high 16 tackles and a sack to earn himself Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week. Robbie Tolbert recorded his season high of 83 yards and fellow receiver Isaiah Russell notched his career high 68 yards. On top of Gil Rivera’s two touchdowns his 117 yards are also the best in his career. The team will travel to RPI this week to battle for the coveted Dutchmen Shoes as they hope to carry this momentum into what will certainly be an emotional rivalry game.
Field Hockey: Heartbreaking loss for the field hockey team as their season comes to an end in a shootout loss to Rochester. The crowd was packed and loud for 4 quarters, 2 overtimes and a shootout but they just couldn’t do enough to get by the Yellowjacket goaltender in the end. Maddie Greco scoring is inevitable as she now owns the top spot for single season goals and points. She also sits in the 6th spot for career goals and assists after only her second season. Megan Dorsey now owns the record for career assist with 22 and a whole senior season to put some distance between her and the 2nd place spot. Goalie Sophie Brady cracks the top 10 for career saves totaling 213 and is 2nd in career wins as a starter. Senior Grace Goddard finishes her career as the all time leader in games played with 73 and senior Kristen O’Shea finishes 7th with 69 games. With the conclusion of this very successful season the team will have a lot to build on for next year as they return a majority of their starters.
Volleyball: After a great season the Volleyball team’s postseason comes to an end after an upset to RIT. The was a close match all the way through and despite leading in most categories the team fell in the 5th set 13-15. It was a high scoring affair as Shannon McGrath recorded her season high 20 as well as Allie Kronenberg who got her season high in assists. The Union women were some of the best in the Liberty League all season long as Maddie McCarron and Shelby McKim both finished top 10 in hitting percentage, Shannon McGrath finished 2nd in kills and aces per set, Allie Kronenberg was 3rd in assists, Georgia Pool finished 2nd in total digs and average digs per set and Maddie McCarron finished 1st in average blocks per set. All the starters will be returning next season as the team looks to have another promising year.
Hockey: A tough weekend for Union Hockey as both teams combined for a record of 0-3-1. The men’s team hosted Alaska Fairbanks for back to back games. Nate Hanley brought the boom, scoring the first goal off a long breakout pass from Cullen Ferguson. Riley Brueck scores next in the opening of the second off a pass behind the net from Carter Korpi followed halfway through the period by a tip in goal from Brandon Buhr. The third period was all Alaska as they went on to score 3 straight including the last one with only 20 seconds to go in the game. Both goalies made impressive stops in overtime to send the game to a shootout. Korpi and Hanley both score their shootout attempts to win 2-1 but the game will still be recorded as a 3-3 tie. The second matchup didn’t go as well for the team as Alaska started the first period with 3 goals. Ben Muthersbaugh got Union on the board with a top shelf powerplay goal in the second. Alaska wouldn’t let them get hot as they scored the next but Brandon Buhr brought life into the crowd with a goal minutes after. A high scoring second period saw two more goals from Alaska but Union and Muthersbaugh didn’t give up hope as he scored another power play goal to end the period. The third period opened with John Prokop capitalizing on another powerplay but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback as the team fell 4-6. The women’s team dropped two tough league games to Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Clarkson scored first to open the second period and Maddie Suitor got Union on the board midway through. Another Clarkson goal came early in the third period but was followed not long after by a goal from Karianne Engelbert which led the game to OT. A short overtime went to Clarkson as Union lost 3-2. Against St. Lawrence Union had a lot of great scoring chances but just couldn’t get any of them to fall as they dropped this one 3-0. The women are off for a week while the men host the same two ECAC opponents the women just played.
