On October 5, 2023, Union students and staff hosted an event where members of the campus community could learn about resources available to students, faculty, and staff of marginalized communities. Both student and staff groups came to show their support at the event in Old Chapel.
The event served as an opportunity for students, staff, and faculty to learn about student groups. “A More Equitable Union (AMU) is an organization on campus that’s built to support equity and inclusion on campus for all groups of people,” Latte Khambete ‘25, the co-president of AMU, said.
“The types of events that we typically do are discussion based, and then sometimes we’ll have presentations by the members about topics that they are passionate about,” Vu Chi Tam ‘24, the secretary of AMEU, continued.
In addition to student groups, staff groups also took advantage of the opportunity to engage with other staff members and students. One group, the Union Staff Council, is a fairly new organization that is meant to make a difference on campus. “It’s an advisory council for the staff at Union College and we’re in our third year of existence,” Emily Brown, Project Coordinator for Administration and Finance and Co Chair for the Union Staff Council said. “But ultimately we’re trying to make recommendations to senior staff to improve employee morale, employee wellness and improve policies on campus as well.”
The event also featured a variety of other groups: Union Pride, Union’s Black Student Union, Union’s Campus Protestant Ministry, Women’s Union, Union’s African Students Association, Union’s LGBTQ Faculty/Staff Alliance, and Union’s BIPOC Employee Alliance were also present to support the campus community. Dozens of students, staff, and faculty members came to the event to learn more about these resources.
