This past Friday, the Men’s Soccer team came up short against Skidmore College in their Liberty League opener.
The game started off with a slow beginning.
Nine and half minutes into the game, Salvador Lopez Jr. ‘20, attempted to score. His shot was ultimately blocked by the Skidmore goaltender, Sebastian Bosch ‘20. It was not until the twentyminute mark where Skidmore senior, Mike Park ‘19, made an effort to score but his shot went high.
Union decided to change things up when they made three substitutions in a span of five minutes.
Zachary Beyloune ‘20 went in for Amal Amchtal ‘21, Jeremy Conn ‘20 for Connor Horan ‘19 and Pedram Malakian ‘19 for Jason Miller ‘19.
A yellow card then called on Union midfielder, Griffin Cowles ‘20.
Skidmore’s Isaac Myran ‘22 tried to make a goal, but it was saved by Union goalie, Trevor Krupp ‘21.
That was quickly followed by Skidmore’ Shoyo Yanagihara ‘21 who made a penalty kick goal.
Jeremy Conn ‘20 strived to make a header shot, however, it was saved by Sebastian Bosch ‘20 of Skidmore.
Skidmore’s Robbie Heumann ‘19 also attempted to make a header shot and it was saved by Trevor Kupp ‘21. Union made three more substitutions as Harrison Wenzel ‘20 went in for Poom Meera ‘21, Chris Muther ‘21 for Griffin Cowles ‘20 and Andrew Rasnick ‘22 for Pedram Malakian ‘19.
The first period ended with Skidmore in the lead with one goal.
Union played a dirty second half as three yellow cards were called on the team.
Starters for the second period were: Trevor Krupp ‘21, Jeremy Conn ‘20, Andrew Rasnick ‘22, Danny Cannon ‘21, Jonas Lobe ‘21, Salvador Lopez Jr. ‘20, Conor Willsie ‘21, Chris Muther ‘21, Harrison Wenzel ‘20 and Yasin Dombayci ‘20.
Salvador Lopez Jr. ‘20 tried to make a goal but it got blocked and was followed by a yellow card on Chris Muther ‘21.
Union made a couple substitutions as Pedram Malakian ‘19, Zachary Beyloune ‘20 and Connor Horan ‘19 re-entered the game replacing Chris Muther ‘21, Andrew Rasnick ‘22 and Jeremy Conn ‘20. Skidmore made three attempts to score as Shaun Franz ‘21 shot went wide, then Alex Ricci ‘20 got blocked, then went high.
Amal Amchtal ‘21 and Pedram Malakian ‘19 responded as they both tried to score but their shots were saved by goalie Sebastian Bosch ‘20 and went high respectively.
More substitutions were made for Union as Poom Meera ‘21 replaced Danny Cannon ‘21, Jason Miller ‘19 for Jonas Lobe ‘21 and Chris Muther ‘21 for Amal Amchtal ‘21.
Alex Ricci ‘20 made an effort to score but it was saved by Trevor Krupp ‘21 of Union.
Francesco D’Iorio ‘20 substituted in for Harrison Wenzel ‘20 and Jeremy Conn ‘20 for Connor Horan ‘19. A yellow card was called on Yasin Dombayci.
A couple of minutes later, Skidmore’s Hart Jamieson ‘22 scored a goal, which gave Skidmore a two- point lead over Union at the conclusion of the game.
Despite the team’s loss, goalkeeper Trevor Krupp ‘21 tallied a career-high of 4 saves, creating a positive sentiment during a tough loss.
