On Sunday, April 30, Union’s annual Springfest took place in Memorial Field House. The lineup for this year was We The Kings, Daya, and Flo Rida. The event began at 1 p.m., and hundreds of students packed the field house.
Union’s Springfest Committee plans the event, including choosing the artists. “A lot of it is trying to get a wide variety so that every student has at least one artist that they know, like, and can sing along with,” Abby Smith ‘23, President of the Springfest Committee, said about choosing artists. “But ultimately it’s availability, it’s pricing. It’s what would work well together, and we really wanted to throw back this year, which is how we wound up with Flo Rida. ‘Cuz you must be living under a rock to not know him.”
We The Kings is a rock band known for their song “Check Yes, Juliet” (2007). Daya is a pop singer known for her songs “Sit Still, Look Pretty” (2016), “Hide Away” (2016), and on The Chainsmokers’ song “Don’t Let Me Down (feat. Daya)” (2016). Flo Rida is a rapper known for his songs “Whistle” (2012), “Low” (2007), and “My House” (2015), among others. Flo Rida’s songs are commonly played at parties thrown by Union students.
Springfest has historically been held outside, but due to the rain, organizers moved the event inside. “We know this may be disappointing, but this was the only way we could guarantee that the event will take place,” The Springfest Committee said.
The dining staff held its yearly barbeque at the nearby Garris Field. Alcohol was not served at the event, nor was it allowed to be brought in. “Any student who is visibly intoxicated, or a risk to themselves or others WILL NOT be admitted to the show. This also goes for those already inside the venue,” The Springfest Committee said. The Springfest Committee also reiterated Union’s Responsible Citizen and Medical Amnesty Policies: these policies “offer a clear message to students that they should report any potentially dangerous cases of alcohol or drug intoxication; they should not be concerned about disciplinary consequences at such a time,” according to the Office of Community Standards.
Students in the crowd expressed their excitement for the event. “Super excited to see what’s going to happen. The choices were great,” Mia Raiti ‘26 said.
“I’m having a lot of fun. I am actually super impressed by the acts. Super excited and huge fan of Flo Rida,” Natalia Sharry ‘23 said.
Students can look forward to the event again next year. Aside from Springfest, Union’s Concert Club also plans another concert each year; students interested in planning Concert Club events can contact the student activities office at [email protected] to get in contact with club leaders.
