Coach Mary Burt announced the six incoming members of Union’s 2018 recruiting class.
Two of the newest members are from New York. Erin Clinton ’22 is a point and starting guard from Pearl River High School. Clinton is the daughter of Union Hall of Fame Point Guard Joe Clinton ’83. Burt sees that Clinton is similar to her father in the fact that she, “has his aggressiveness and court vision.”
Another athlete is Maggie Schuermann ’22. Schuermann is a starting guard from Cooperstown High School. Burt’s take on Schuermann is that, “Maggie is a tough cookie. We’ve had her at our prospect day each of the last two seasons and both years she was all over the court trying to make an impact. She compensates for her size by always going for rebounds, diving for loose balls, and sprinting on every possession.”
The incoming class also has two girls from Massachusetts. Darby Leid ’22 is a starting guard from Wayland High School. Burt said that “It’s extremely rare to come across a high school student as exemplary a leader as Darby was for both Wayland and the Mass Huskies. We’ve talked to a number of coaches in the region who have been impressed by Darby’s communication and IQ on the floor. She’s a standout defender as a result, and her mentality as a scorer has improved each year that we’ve watched her.”
As for the other Massachusetts player, Laura Vinton ’22, Burt stated that Vinton is a “solid passer, finisher, defender, and rebounder. Laura’s game is all about those little details. We can’t wait to see how she contributes to the team.” Vinton is a guard and forward from Wachusett Regional High School.
Another member who is joining next year is Anna Metcalf ’22. Metcalf is a guard and forward from the Wheeler School in Rhode Island. She is the leading scorer in her high school program’s history. Burt says that “She’s a remarkable open court defender, a very unselfish teammate, and an athlete that will help contribute to our transition attack in the open court.”
The last player who will be joining the team is Amber Raisner ’22. Raisner is a point guard and starting guard who attended William Hall High School from Connecticut. She has had many accomplishments during her high school career. “Amber led Hall to a Class LL state championship appearance game and a #4 state ranking after Hall was the 32nd ranked team just two years earlier,” Burt commented.
Also, Burt describes Amber as “ the type of player that can will a team to a victory, and we are really excited to see how she plays off of some of her other incoming teammates in the backcourt.”
Overall, Burt believes that she has recruited “some true competitors who will provide us with the speed, skill, and depth to play at a tempo we have not been able to play in a few years.”
