Susie Hanks

Jackson Giamattei, Staff Writer

WOW: Susie Hanks, Senior Associate Dean of Admissions

Nominated By: Lilia Tiemann

Nomination: She is an incredibly hard working and dedicated colleague who puts in long hours and still feels she doesn’t do enough. Susie never complains and is usually the first to volunteer to help as early or as late as needed. I so admire her drive and her advice throughout the years.

What are your proudest accomplishments?

Raising three wonderful daughters who are bright, accomplished, strong, independent women. They have each forged their own path and have confidently succeeded in their chosen field.

What are you passionate about?

Living a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. I love to find healthy meals to cook. To experiment with different cuisines and continuously make small changes in order to live more “green”.

Who do you look up to?

All women who balance work, family and life. I have been blessed with having many women in my life to emulate, including my mother who has been successful in her career while donating much time and effort to charity work.

What does being a woman at Union mean to you?

To serve as a role model to our female students as a person who can be accomplished in my work, enjoy my career for decades and hopefully encourage more women to follow their passion.

How do you think Union can do a better job at supporting women on our campus?

In my years at Union, I have seen many positive changes for women at Union including the development of the Women’s Union, the GSWS major, the Templeton Scholarships to encourage women to study STEM, and a strong representation of women on the faculty and in positions of importance on campus. My wish is for efforts to continue to provide the support and role models that are so important for our students.
