Men’s baseball swept a doubleheader with Vassar College on April 28, winning the two games 12-1 and 9-6.
Jake Vesling ’18 was the starting pitcher in game one, tossing a seven-inning complete game, allowing only six hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts and one walk.
The Dutchmen (14-4, 24-6) jumped on the Brewers early with three runs in the first inning. Jack Koch ’21 was hit by a pitch before Harrison Glatt ’18 was walked to put a pair of runners aboard.
Sam Kirschenbaum ’18 then reached on an error after laying down a sacrifice bunt attempt, allowing both Glatt and Koch to score.Sean Cullen ’20 then delivered with an RBI base hit to make it 3-0.
Vassar would tally its lone run in game one on a fifth-inning RBI double. Union returned to the scoring column in the sixth and seventh innings.
Colin Kelly ’20 blasted a three-run home run in the sixth, and Koch added a grand slam in the seventh to open up the Floodgates.
Kelly finished with two runs and four RBIs. Koch had three hits, two runs and four RBIs. Cullen added three hits, two runs and an RBI.
Vassar’s offense came to life in game two. The Brewers would hold a 3-2 lead into the middle part of the game before Union answered with a four-run sixth inning to gain control of the game. The Dutchmen would add one more in the ninth to seal a 9-6 win.
Vesling, Andy Labeck ’18 and Joe Ganim ’19 each collected two hits in Union’s second win of the day. Ganim drove in three runs.
Nick Williams ’18 earned his second save of the season tossing two scoreless frames to close out the win. Cullen scored three runs.
On April 24, Union rallied from a 4-0 deficit to beat SUNY Oneonta 9-5.
The Red Dragons opened the game reaching base on three consecutive Dutchmen errors, scoring two runs in the inning before a two-run home run in the second made it 4-0. In the second inning, Ganim singled home Labeck to get Union on the board.
The Dutchmen followed with another run in the third when Cullen scored Glatt with a single.
The Dutchmen grabbe the lead in the fourth inning with two hit batsmen and a walk set up a bases-clearing double for Vesling that made it 5-4 Union.
Union added three more runs in the sixth inning on a passed ball, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Kelly.
Oneonta scored its final run of the game in the seventh to edge within three runs of Union.
Vesling would add another Dutchmen run when he scored on a passed ball in the eighth Inning.
Vesling finished the day with a team-leading three RBIs, while Glatt, Vesling and Cullen each recorded two hits.
Charlie Hoover ’21 earned his second win of the season, allowing one earned run on four hits over five innings of relief, striking out six and walking two. Hoover relieved Williams to start the third inning.
