Union beats Anna Maria College at AMCAT field 54-7

On Sunday, September 15, 2019 the men’s football team traveled to Anna Maria College. The Dutchmen rolled over the AMCATs, winning by a score of 54-7.

The Dutchmen started off strong, scoring on their first possession of the game. William Bellamy ’21 capped off a 50-yard drive with a 10-yard TD to Andre Ross Jr. ’22, to put the Dutchmen on the board in the first five minutes of the contest. The Dutchmen held Anna Maria to three-and-outs on its first three possessions of the game. Union would go on to limit the AMCATS to three plays or less on 10 of their non-scoring drives. They continued to dominate the field when they held Anna Maria to three-and-outs on its first three possessions of the game. On its second possession, Union was forced to punt for the only time of the game. The Dutchmen ended the first quarter still in control of the game with a 4-yd rush for a touchdown by Ike Irabor ‘22. Irabor continued the scoring streak in their first possession of the second quarter, scoring another touchdown off a 3-yd rush. The Dutchmen scored touchdowns on five consecutive possessions in the second quarter, including two by Joseph Ferreria ‘22 and one from Spencer Crystal ‘21. They were ahead 42-0 entering the second half of the game. In the second half, Union scored its first safety of the season. After being stopped on fourth and goal at the one-yard line, the Dutchmen went on defense and Dante Scott ‘21 recorded a sack for the safety. The Dutchmen would then go on to add a field goal by Will Halpin ‘21 and another touchdown thanks to a three-yard run by Griff Wallner ‘22 to take the 54-0 lead. Anna Maria would end up scoring on a 28-yard pass in the final minutes of the game to erase Union’s shutout bid.

The Dutchmen improved their record to 2-0, while the AMCATs were defeated anain with a record of 0-2. Quarterback, Bellamy, threw for 148 yards and three touchdowns.Irabor led the tailbacks with 87 yards and two touchdowns, while Ferreira and Wallner both rushed for a touchdown each. Ferreira also caught one touchdown pass and had 41 total receiving yards. Andre Ross Jr. caught one touchdown pass and had a total of 58 yards with two receptions. The Dutchmen rushed for a total 250 yards and threw for a total of 248. Evan Gilland ‘20 earned his first career passing yards, completing a 27-yard pass to Robbie Hermann ‘22 on a fake punt.The Dutchmen kept Anna Maria to just 107 yards of total offense, which included -7 yards rushing. They also held control of the ball for over 35 minutes of the game.
