Dutchwoman of the Week interview: Anna Gagion ’19

Seif Refaat, Sports Editor

Hometown: Briarcliff Manor, NY

Major: Environmental Policy and French

Campus Activities: Member of the Swimming & Diving team, member of Gamma Phi Beta, and President of French Club.

Q: Can you briefly explain how you started swimming? How was your experience on the swimming & diving team in high school?

A: I decided to start diving because it looked a lot more fun than swimming. On my high school swimming and diving team, I was surrounded with immense amounts of positivity and school spirit as well as a real appreciation for the sport we were doing.

Q: How has your experience been playing at Union College, and what are the differences between high school and college?

A: The Union College Dive team has been an extremely positive experience for me. I am so fortunate to have a team who I love and a coach who believes in me. The difference between high school and college is that you feel like you are truly part of a family at Union. I feel extremely supported by my swim and dive teammates and I have been able to form very strong relationships with people I would otherwise not have met if I were not on the team.

Q: Do you have any pre-game rituals?

A: I wink at my coach and I sing “Dancing Queen” as I walk down the board.

Q: What are your favorite things about being on the Union Swimming & Diving team?

A: Davis “The Sledge Hammer” Harrington.

Q: What has been the highlight of your athletic career so far?

A: The relationships I’ve made.

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about the Swimming & Diving team?

A: We are weirdly into the song “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan. I honestly can’t tell if it’s sexist or not.

Q: How do you think playing a sport has influenced your experience at Union?

A: It has allowed me to have great time management and leadership skills.

Q: What is your favorite thing to eat on campus?

A: Pierogies in Upper.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Union?

A: My financial aid.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant in Schenectady and why?

A: La Mexicana because of their 2 dollar tacos.

Q: What is a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?

A: I’m on Youtube with Rick Astley on the Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends float at the Macy’s Day Parade in 2007 singing “Never Gonna Give You Up”… weird flex.

Q: What are your interests outside of diving?

A: French guys.

Q: Who/what serves as your biggest inspiration?

A: Knowing that I’ve done my best.

Q: What are your goals for after graduation?

A: To be an elementary school teacher and to help to close the education gap.
