Union had its annual Lobster fest on Friday, May 25. The event took place in Jackson’s Garden on Reamer Center’s back patio, with students milling about in the warm spring sun. The event was run by the Student Forum, who provided both the lobster itself and the themed T-shirts that drew many students to Lobsterfest hours before it started.
Forum bought the 1,100 lobsters, which were provided to students along with melted butter, lemon slices and shell crackers. In the end, all of the lobsters bought for the event had been consumed by students.
In addition to lobster, there was also traditional cookout food such as hamburgers, veggie burgers, corn, watermelon, brownies and ice cream at the barbeque. Chabad at Union also provided kosher falafel for people who did not eat lobster.
“I thought it was really nice. Even if you didn’t eat lobster, you and your friends could still relax and have a good time and eat good food,” Alex Pierce ’21 said.
Previously in the year, Student Forum asked students to submit T-shirt design for the event. Of the designs submitted, Sonya Hanson’s ’18 was chosen, which featured a stylized, salmon-colored lobster on the back of a white T-shirt, with a small image of similarly colored buoys on the left breast.
Forum purchased 600 shirts with Hanson’s design to give out to the first 600 students in line for food.
Although all the shirts were taken, not all students were fans of the design. “I thought that the shirt was a poor choice and far too busy, and I thought that in the future that we should more towards having less leftover food,” Brian Zick ’19 said.
In the past, they had only given out 500 T-shirts. This year, although the line went from Reamer to Messa, there were T-shirts left over.
When asked how she felt her organization’s event went, Student Forum President Jasmin Nakkab ’18 said, “Lobsterfest was one of the most enjoyable and successful events organized by Student Forum this year.”
Lobsterfest is a springtime Union tradition.
