Sarthak Grover ’17, born and raised in New Delhi, India, double majored in Political Science and Economics and held positions such as Class President and was a brother of the Sigma Phi Society.
In America, Grover took notice of how textile fabrics with an origin in India, such as ginghams and madras, had found their way into popular clothing brands such as Vineyard Vines and Chubbies.
In addition, he noticed that when the weather began to warm up, students would bring out their unique, colorful shirts.
Hand-made textiles from India in the Western world tend to be quite expensive and reserved for expensive fashion labels.
When friends from the United States would visit Grover in India, he noticed how they were drawn to many block-printed shirts from tiny stores where they were available for much cheaper prices.
With an entrepreneurial mindset and a sense of opportunity, Mangrove Supply was born.
Mangrove Supply’s aim is to flood the mass market with cool, hand-crafted Indian fabrics in the form of weekend wear and good vibes. In India, these shirts have been created for the past five to six generations, and the tradition of shirtmaking is a passed-down family tradition.
The biggest reason behind these colorful shirts is that large fashion labels sell these identical shirts for hundreds of dollars, while Mangrove Supply will sell them for just a fraction of that price.
This will end an era of markups, as well as allowing more textile artisans in India the chance for employment and financial advancement.
Furthermore, it will allow the Indian textile workers to compete in a market dominated by the Technological Revolution.
So far, the name Mangrove Supply is quickly spreading, and was even featured in Sitara* Fashion show in St. Andrews, Scotland.
