Women’s Soccer falls to 4-4 after conference loss to Vassar

Last Saturday, September 28, 2019, Women’s Soccer faced tough competition as they narrowly lost an away game at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The game was one of stellar defense as the Red Foxes beat Union with a final score of one to nothing.

The offense seemed promising in the begining of the game with Fiona Zimmerman ’22 nearly missing a goal due to an impressive save from Vassar Goalkeeper Fiona Walsh ’20.

The match remained 0-0 for the full 90 minutes of regulation play, with the only goal of the game occurring at the 95:34 minute mark. Gabi Tulk ’21 scored the only goal of the game and her third goal of the season.

In this overtime thriller, defense prevailed as the major force for both teams. Forwards were shut down, and unable to connect and score goals for their teams.

Overall, Union finished the game with 10 total shots on goal, five of which came in each half. They were unable to get a shot off in overtime, ending the game in disappointment.

Vassar’s offense saw struggles as well. Vassar compiled seven shots in both halves, and added two more after regulation ended.

In total Vassar outshot Union by a margin of 16-10, and by a margin of 2-0 in overtime. Saves were a crucial part of this heavily defensive game.

Union ended the day with a total of one save, which occured in the first half of regulation. Marist compiled a total of three saves, with one in the first half and two in the latter half of regulation play.

In regard to cornerkicks, Union failed to capitalize on their six opportunities, all of which occured in the first half of regulation. Vassar racked up a total of five corner kicks, with four in the first half and one in the latter.

The record for Union’s Women’s Soccer team currently sits at 4-4 and maintains a Liberty League Conference record of 0-2, with those losses coming from St. Lawrence University and Vassar College.

Their next game is October 5, 2019 as they take on rival RPI at College Park Field.
